Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA), the core component of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell, is the site of energy conversion within the fuel cell. The membrane electrode is responsible for multi-phase material transfer (liquid water, hydrogen, oxygen, proton and electron transfer) within the fuel cell, and is responsible for converting the chemical energy of hydrogen into electrical energy through electrochemical reaction. The performance and cost of membrane electrodes influence and even determine the performance, lifetime and cost of PEM fuel cells. Membrane electrodes with efficient multiphase transport capability can greatly improve the performance of fuel cells.
