The carbon and silicon content of Hastelloy B nickel molybdenum alloy is extremely low, which reduces the precipitation of carbon and other impurities in the welding heat affected zone. Therefore, its welds also have sufficient corrosion resistance. Hastelloy B-2 alloy exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in reducing media, such as hydrochloric acid solutions at various temperatures and concentrations. It also has good corrosion resistance in medium concentration sulfuric acid solution (or containing a certain amount of chloride ions). It can also be used in environments with acetic acid and phosphoric acid. Alloy materials can only have the best corrosion resistance when they are in a suitable metallographic state and have a pure crystal structure.

Hastelloy B has excellent resistance to reducing environments like sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations and other nonoxidizing acids. It also resists stress corrosion cracking induced by chlorides. Hastelloy B has poor resistance to oxidizing environments, therefore, it should not be used where ferric or cupric salts are present as these salts may cause rapid corrosion failure.
